There is an immediate need for volunteers to serve as hosts at Camp Quixote. Currently set up at First Christian Church, the camp is a successful tent city organization that offers its residents a safe and secure community. The governing city ordinance requires that a host table be staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Volunteers come from host churches and other faith communities, the community at large, and the camp residents themselves. But to ensure continued safety and security, more hosts are needed. If you are at least 18 years old, enjoy people and conversation, and can volunteer for a three-hour shift on a weekly basis, Camp Quixote could be just the community service you're looking for. Orientation is required, but can be arranged for groups or individuals. For more information or to arrange for host orientation, call the First Christian Church office at 360-943-8025.
SACRED ART & MORE
What is sacred art? It might be a painting, a sculpture, a banner, mosaic, colored sand, … — the possibilities are endless. And it might be sacred because it was created to adorn a sacred space, or to express a sacred principle, or to depict a sacred individual or event. A search for a definition will reveal not one but many definitions; but the search is interesting.
The 4th annual World Sacred Music Festival will proudly present a small exhibit of beautiful sacred art from a number of faith traditions. Some is from private collections and some from houses of worship. Some were created by local artists. Some are new and some old. Each one is unique.
Come to the festival. View stunning visual artworks, hear stories and music sacred to a wide number of faith traditions, see some unusual dance traditions, and eat some yummy ethnic foods. It’s all March 8, 11:00 a.m. -9:30 p.m. in the Minnaert Center for the Arts at SPSCC, 2011 Mottman Road SW. General admission is $20; students and low-income $15; kids under 12 free, but no one will be turned away. Tickets only at the door.
The complete performance schedule, directions, a map, photos and much more, are on the website at www.olysacredmusic.org
GET IN FREE!
Would you like to get into the World Sacred Music Festival free? You can, by volunteering for just a few hours at the festival. Still needed are:
Stage hands – Help performers get on and off stage with their instruments etc. (we need a lot of hands for the main stage, 5:00-7:00 p.m.)
Closing clean-up – Help close down the performers lounge and refreshment tables; take down art work; pack up left over programs, admission supplies, signs, etc.
MC – Supporters of Interfaith Works who have a good speaking voice and no fear of being onstage with a microphone
Host/hostess for the performers hospitality rooms – Set out food and drink as needed and keep the place orderly
Be part of the excitement of putting on a festival. Meet the performers and artists. And get in free! For more info, or to volunteer, please phone or email the IW office: 360-357-7224, interfaithworks@comcast.net.
